The Distance - About Us
Upon seeing the Distance it’s easy to see why they are still one of Australia’s must see live acts. With an incredible warmth and energy that exudes from the band it’s hard not to be sucked into the catchy melodies and flowing harmonies of their original music. The guys have been together for 16 years and over that time have notched up some incredible achievements.
Not long after forming they hit the studio to record their debut album ‘Don’t look Back‘, released into music stores right around the country. The first single release ‘Get a little Dirt on your Hands’ with Australian country music legend ‘Johnny Chester’ on guest vocals received strong airplay across the country and helped John to win ‘Best independent release’ at that years Victorian CM awards. The band itself were top 5 finishers in 4 other categories, including ‘Best album’ and ‘Best vocal’. Their debut album spawned three more radio singles ‘Don’t Look Back’, ‘This Land’ and ‘Waiting’. The video clips for all three songs were played constantly on CMC and helped The Distance set their mark with country fans across Australia.
The band toured the east coast of Australia later that year in support of their debut album and won over many new fans on the way. At the 2007 Tamworth Country Music festival the band was asked to play as part of the official opening ceremony concert. And to top off a great year the band played on the main stage to close the entertainment at the 2007 Deniliquin Ute Muster in front of thousands of late night revellers. This is band that is just as comfortable in the corner of a pub playing a heartfelt ballad or rockin it out on the big stage.
The Distance quickly backed up their debut album with their second studio effort ‘Grounded‘, released in 2008. The lead off single ‘Country Life’ featured Australian Crawl frontman and Aussie Music legend James Reyne on guest vocals. James also appeared in the film clip which spent 10 weeks in the CMC Top 10. The band travelled again to Tamworth on the back of their new album and played 10 shows in as many days. Their new album spawned 2 more singles, ‘Coming on Fast’ and ‘Little Cowgirl’, both songs receiving airplay right across Australia.
After the release of ‘Grounded’ the band decided to release a little EP of songs that had inspired them to play music. The EP was dubbed ‘Big Towns to Outback Sounds‘ (released 2009). The band released one single from the EP, a cover of an early Dingoes track ‘Payday Again’.
After a two year hiatus the band once again returned to the studio in 2014 to record their 3rd full length studio album ‘The Hour is Long‘. The result is ten songs recorded between Melbourne’s ‘Sing Sing’ studios’ and Gavin’s home studio, and is was released in October 2014. The new album sees the bands sound evolving once again into something they like to call ‘Roots rock’.
With their trademark harmonies and infectious melodies, brilliant musicianship and song writing all on show, its still hard to pin this band down with influences ranging from Tom Petty and The Black Crowes all the way through to Jackson Browne, Levon Helm, The Eagles and Australian band The Flood.
